Edinburgh has been dubbed the 'Athens of the north' as it is considered to be one of the lushest, greenest and most architecturally pleasing cities in Europe. Together with its castle, the university is the Scottish city's crowning glory. The institution plays an integral role in the local community, contributing to its vibrant atmosphere before, during and after its famous festival season where many of the world's best comedians attract million of visitors to its winding streets. When the University of Edinburgh was founded in 1582, Scotland had more universities than England (by a margin of four to two). It now comprises the colleges of humanities and social sciences (HSS), science and engineering (CSE), and medicine and veterinary medicine (MVM) and is particularly highly rated for the research it carries out relating to computer science, physics and medicine. Many people who have studied there have gone on to find fame and acclaim, including current British prime minister Gordon Brown and the man who came up with the theory of evolution, Charles Darwin. |
